AMERICAN GYPSY, A STRANGER IN EVERYBODY'S LAND

Gypsies reside all over the world. It said to be more than one million in America alone. I watched the award winning documentary "American Gypsy" by filmmaker Jasmine Dellal and for me, I thought it provided great insight. Curious about what other people thought, I read through the comments on the PBS site where it once aired and was taken aback a bit by the length of ignorance and negativity, though I can't say I was surprised.

Gypsies have always seemingly had a bad rep. Stealing, panhandling, exploiting...but doesn't every culture have all that somewhere? It must not be forgotten that Gypsies have been ostracized and prosecuted, and have never really had a home. Some have stayed as close to the culture as possible, some have assimilated into others. The documentary explains assimilation in America specifically.

Here's where Our Gypsy Souls rest. Gypsy is a race. Gypsy is a lifestyle. Gypsy is a style. It is all of the above and Gypsy has influenced music such as Johannes Brahm (yes, classical!),  Gogol Bodello, and our own Angelina 'Jipse' Roz. We embrace the positives in this blog. We love to travel and live bohemian. We call ourselves Gypsyters. The modern day hipster gypsies.  Get in on it :-)

BIGGER FATTER GYPSIER ... WRONG!!

We were shocked to see this poster that Channel 4 were going to use for 'Big Fat Gypsy Weddings' advert. Not big fans of the show, where,  in our opinion it shows a negative side of Irish Traveller Life, rather than a Gypsy life. Major difference between a traveler lifestyle and a Gypsy cultural background. With ignorance toward this fact, UK audience is miseducated. But it makes for good TV, so what do they care?

We also received much criticism of our blog also saying we should know the difference between Gypsy style fashion and culture. We do know, thank you very much. Guess it's a matter of opinion on what each individual finds offensive. We are showing Gypsy culture which includes history, fashion, music in a very positive light. So where is the harm?

Stop taking this blog so seriously and take this poster and that TV show seriously. It caused bullying and upset to a lot of families of the show, especially the children.

ROAMIN IN ROME

More traveling coming at ya!

Summer in Italy....siete magnifici! The lifestyle here is so easy going and leisure which is perfectly understandable when one is surrounded by beauty in its architecture, cuisines, and people. Accompany this with good wine, and the heart is even more fonder. Rome is an especially great escape to visit a history so rich. Included are the Sistine Chapel, Colosseum, and Vatican City.

Breathtaking ceiling of Sistine

Behind me is Trevi Fountain

The Coliseum!

It's not a postcard, it's The Coliseum

Heey Gladiator!

Finish the day with vino

LDN TWN MOMENTS

I am currently in London, gypsy that I am. Perhaps the music capital of Europe? Best places to go to if you fancy coming here for a weekend?

For shoppin: hit Covent Garden. Avoid busy & tourist vibe of Oxfrod Street and think Soho NY equivalent and hit shops around Neals' Yard. You can find real bargains at Rockit!

For food: Busaba Eathai serves best thai food at an average price of £20 per person with drinks. Now in Covent Garden also!

For hot boys&girls: head to the infamous Pineapple Dance studios. Even if you can't dance, who cares? Just hang outside and you will see.

For live music: Camden Town has a rock&roll vibe right next door to Covent Garden. Visit the great Amy Winehouse's favourite pub Hawley Arms and watch live bands at Proud Galleries overlooking the beautiful Camden Lock.

Whilst the weather is suddenly hot, head to London for this weekend! Hurry! I am here to guide you!

GYPSY CINEMA

The cinema world seems to be mesmerized by the Gypsy culture. There are some great documentaries noting music, lifestyle and present day gypsies and their ancestry.

Jasmine Dellal 2006 documentary featuring Johnny  'Gypsy Caravan: When The Road Bends'

'The Pied Piper of Hutzovina' Gogol Bordello documentary on the subject of Eugene Hutz being a gypsy

And also another Brazilian short film we are very excited about, due out early 2012 but already having followed their progress through Instagram... watch this space through their blog

Here are some gorgeous still shots in the meantime ...

ILLEST GYPSY

Who is the Illest Gypsy in town? Well... I am.
Illest because of my good natured heart, maybe but these days it literally is the illest.
I have been under the covers for some time now and plans have changed themselves accordingly.
I am no longer travelling to Greece to join Sophie and been mainly staying indoors thinking about life philosophically and writing new songs (the positive outcome) but mainly bored out of my head watching lots of tv and eating Haribo's all day long (the negative outcome).

Nonetheless thought I would feedback my ill self to you. Pre bday blues are also near ... Damn.

Grim rainy London Town mid July, come on... really?

Haribo's under the pillows = illest gypsy diet

Trying to stay healthy and compensate for the sugar intake before

Watching sappy old school films clearly help too ... not!

And Sophie enjoying Malia meanwhile .... am so jealous! Should be there too!

Wave the gypsy flag for me, Sophie!

No blues in Malia clearly.
